Inside the crazy evolution of JoJo Siwa and her transformation through the years

She’s in her Miley Cyrus Bangerz era

Did you ever think the bow wearing, chirpy child star JoJo Siwa would grew into a rebel, teasing an x-rated single echoing the era of Miley Cyrus shedding her Disney roots to drop Can’t Be Tamed? Of course you did! And of course she should. It’s a tale as old as time where parents clutch pearls and fume that the innocent child star who grows into an adult and stops acting like a child anymore dares to speak about anything more adult – but we’ve seen it with Britney Spears, we’ve seen it with Miley and now we’re seeing JoJo Siwa aspirationally reach for the same heights as she prepares to release her first ‘grown up’ single Karma. If you saw JoJo Siwa on the iHeart red carpet this week, you’ll have seen her transformation is striking – so here’s a look at her wild evolution as she enters her twenties.

The bow era

JoJo Siwa is best known for appearing on Dance Moms and then becoming a Nickelodeon star who was literally everywhere. I used to work in River Island for years before becoming a journalist, and in the kids section we were flogging the JoJo Siwa bow. I had no clue what it was, I just knew she was everywhere.

In this era, JoJo was making music like Kid In A Candy Store. So sickly – but she was 14, and her target audience were even younger. It was overload of sweetness and candy visuals and became her trademark energetic vibe.

2021 – JoJo comes out

In 2021, JoJo came out initially as pansexual and then later confirmed she isn’t into guys at all, and has used the labels gay and queer to describe herself. She was living her best life and started becoming an adult! Diva, icon, queen.

The Karma era

Now JoJo is teasing Karma, and saying how much she idolises Miley Cyrus who is clearly her blueprint for being a child star then coming out as queer and having a wild, adult era. JoJo’s new single saw her debut a wild, KISS makeup style on the red carpet and in her music video which looks like it has a queer relationship storyline. It’s out on Friday. Mother is serving! The JoJo Siwa transformation era is only just beginning.
