Bit of a nerd for Geek Girl? Here’s what to watch next while you manifest a season two

Some could say it’s called being Insatiable

Geek Girl is the newest tween phenomenon to hit Netflix, and with it came raving reviews from both critics and teenage girls in their twenties reliving their childhoods. The much loved book series was released as a 10 episode series last week, and the show is touching, informative and a real insight into the world of neurodivergence. Also, haven’t we all dreamed of Wilbur Evans telling us we have the potential to be a runway model?

Netflix has pretty much perfected the tween high school series, and if you’re searching for your next watch, look no further. The streaming platform has every variation of Wattpad trope you can imagine. So if the series has left you with a YA-shaped hole in your heart, here are some other shows like Geek Girl to watch next to help you pass the time whilst we wait for the promise of a second season.

Heartstopper

Via Netflix

Heartstopper is the perfect remedy if you’re missing a wholesome tween series in your life. Kit Connor and Joe Locke play Nick and Charlie in an adorable friends-to-lovers that centres not only on love but also identity, sexuality and friendship. The whole show is just so perfect it makes me want to cry. Plus, season three will be hitting Netflix screens on the third of October this year, so you don’t have to wait years to keep watching. 10/10 would watch again.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

If you read Geek Girl growing up, the likelihood is that you’ve probably also read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which was definitely the read of my childhood. This is a perfect rom com focused around a 17-year-old Lara Jean who writes letters to all her past crushes, and deals with the consequences once her sister reveals that she sent them all out. The bond between the three sisters is unmatched, so if you have sisters yourself, prepare to heavily relate. The movies also received high praises from fans for its inclusivity of the Song-Covey family’s Korean heritage.

The movie series was also the start of Noah Centineo’s career, and if you can look past his “it matters not what you’ve done but what you do with what you’ve done” speech, you will no doubt love this.

I was skeptical of this show at first, thinking it might be a cringey show with a major pick me main character. And guess what? It was. But guess what? I still LOVED it. Finished the whole thing in a day. It’s one of those series where you have to put judgement aside and just enjoy the level of cringiness the show has to offer. It follows a young girl, Jackie, whose entire family just died (way to pile the tragic backstory on) and is forced to move to the country with 10 boys, despite having a rich uncle who lives in New York with no kids. It doesn’t really make sense, but the series ends up being so cute that you just don’t care. Plus, the love interest, Cole Walter, is everything. You can catch me in Netflix’s Instagram comments begging for season two’s release date.

Gossip Girl

I don’t even need to write anything here. What can I say about Gossip Girl that hasn’t already been said?

If you want a series filled with pure chaos, hot people, outfit serves and high stakes drama, Gossip Girl is your response. If you’ve ever dreamed of life in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, this show has it all. From changing lives to creating incredible memes, all six seasons of this TV show should be mandatory watching for girls everywhere. Sure, it’s a little more adult rated than Geek Girl, so maybe don’t watch it with your 11-year-old sister.

The Kissing Booth

This is a classic if you’re a cheesy rom com girlie. Elle, again with a tragic backstory, has a huge crush on her best friend’s gorgeous senior six foot something older brother. The film is a cringe filled mess at times, but can be weirdly comforting and it’s kind of a Netflix staple now. I can forgive some of the subpar storytelling seeing as this story actually started on Wattpad, but I will never forgive those DISGUSTING yellow school uniforms. Since when do American schools wear a uniform, and since when are they legally allowed to be that ugly?

Insatiable

Via Netflix

In the same year as The Kissing Booth, Netflix caused major controversy by releasing Insatiable, starring ex-Disney queen Debby Ryan. It’s got some of that Geek Girl fashion focus, and the story follows a young girl turned pageant queen. The show is a far cry from her Jessie days, and takes a much darker turn than the lighthearted tween series. Watch with caution!

Geek Girl is available to watch on Netflix now. For more like this and all the latest Netflix drops and memes like The Holy Church of Netflix on Facebook.
