Rumours and rekindling: A winding history of Maya Jama and Stormzy’s on-and-off romance

We are as happy as you are to confirm that Maya Jama and Stormzy have rekindled their on-and-off romance. And with Maya hosting the all-new Love Island: All Stars series, the attention can’t help but be directed at the amazing host’s life on and off-screen. 

Maya dated Stormzy (who real fans know him by his name Michael) for four years before a tragic (like, seriously, we were sobbing) spilt in 2019. But with their recent rekindle, the pair have really made it clear that distance really does make the heart grow fonder. Yay! 

So look no further, we have the full timeline from when the stars met to the tragic break up through to holiday reunions. Here’s everything these UK A-listers have been up to in their whirlwind relationship:

2014- First meeting at the start of their careers 

Maya and Stormzy first met in October at a Red Bull event in 2014, when both were at the start of their careers and relatively out of the media spotlight.

An instant attraction was obvious between the two, with Maya admitting in a joint interview with Vogue: “I knew I fancied him from the start.” Like many, the pair initially trialled the whole friend situation, until a first kiss set everything in line.  

2015 – They started dating but kept things under wraps 

Three months after meeting, Maya Jama and Stormzy started dating and quickly became one of the UK’s power couples. The pair got together at 20 and 21 before anyone really knew who they were, setting out a foundation for a normal relationship, mostly out the of the public eye. That is of course, until their fame grew.

2016 – Stormzy got more and more famous and dedicated a song to Maya 

As Stormzy’s music career grew, more attention was directed the couple’s way. With Maya starring in his music video to the song written for her, “Birthday Girl”. It’s one thing having a song written for you, but starring in the music video is the tribute every girl deserves!

Stormy wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “That was for the Mrs but I hope any girl that hears it can vibe to it and play it on their birthday also and feel special.”

2017 – Proposal pressure and growing tensions 

Two years into dating, Stormzy had his eyes of the prize of Maya Jama. He told The Mirror: “I’m still so young but I want to propose, it’s going to happen and I will do it right.”

With growing media attention and criticism, Maya felt a growing pressure of being labelled as “Stormzy’s girlfriend”, particularly as a woman in the industry with the conversation following her being limited to her relationship. 

2019 – The big split amid endless cheating rumours 

After four years together, heartbroken fans learnt that the seemingly perfect couple had split. Cheating rumours quickly began to swirl, following speculation of Stormzy being unfaithful to Maya with fellow singer Jorja Smith.

Stormzy was quick to shut down these rumours, but it wasn’t long before Maya moved out of their South West London home.  As any girl in Maya’s situation would, the social media wipe of any trace of their relationship was cleared, with the classic unfollow, hinting at a messy split. 

2021- Maya gets engaged to her new boyfriend Ben Simmons

After an eight-month romance, that went public at Wimbledon in July 2021, Stormzy watched Maya get engaged to Australian basketball star, Ben Simmons. The athlete certainly has a type for successful women, with his previous ex being Kendall Jenner. 

Luckily, for Stormzy’s sake, the pair weren’t meant to be. With their hectic schedules driving them apart. 

2023- Maya spotted supporting Stormzy at his headline gig

Stormzy took headline stage the All Points East festival in August of 2023, with a very a special supporter in his corner. Obviously, fans lost their minds when Maya was spotted on the sidelines and rumours of their romance kicking off again immediately started to swirl. 

2023 – Hand holding on a luxury holiday to Greece 

Nothing says relationship rekindle like a romantic getaway at a luxury resort in Greece. Four years since the split, the couple were photographed holding hands in Greece. The pair certainly know how to set the record straight in style. 

In the UK, we have had some iconic celebrity couples, from Abbey Clancy and Peter Crouch to Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright. After reflecting on Maya and Stormzy’s whirlwind of a romance timeline, it would be fair to say they take the lead.
