Meet the guys shaking up clubbing in Manchester

They know where it’s at

Whether it’s a huge one at WHP or an up and coming DJ hitting up Antwerp Mansion, Prelinks is the app to make sure your nights out in Manchester are taken to the next level.

All of the best events Manchester has to offer are listed in one handy place, with each night presenting a description of the music, the location, the opening times and most importantly, the number of people attending.

The cherry on top? Once you’ve joined an event on the app, you can see the profiles of other people going – then it’s all about the swiping, matching and chatting before the night starts.

We spoke to some of the biggest movers and shakers in Manc, and asked them about Prelinks, what the app does and how it’s transforming nights out in Manchester.

Holly Hewitt, third year, Chemistry

“A good night out at uni consists of a pre with a bottle of wine with my friends, a cheap night out and a DJ who plays a good set of music.”

Holly always uses Prelinks before she hits the club. She said: “It allows you to meet new people and as I’m a very sociable person, it really appeals to me. I also like the fact that you get to meet people face-to-face but in a familiar environment, so it’s really relaxed.

“One of Prelinks’ big strengths is the fact you can see which of your Facebook friends are attending an event. It’s great, because if my flat mates aren’t going out, I can see who else is going and find other people to go with!”

Club LIV is one of Holly’s favourite venues and she recommends looking out for Socialite Thursdays. She said: “They’ve got really good DJs and the drinks are cheap. It’s the kind of night where you can get dressed up and still not spend loads of money.”

Holly thinks having all of the events in one place on the app is much better than having to trawl through Facebook. She said: “It is so easy to use and it saves a lot of time. It’s also perfect for freshers who have never been to the city before – they can meet new people who are interested in the same events.

“I think the idea is a natural fit for students. It really sells itself. I only have to explain the basic idea of the app and people instantly fall in love with it.”

Josh Kalms, third year, Business Management

When Josh isn’t busy as an entrepreneur or being a black belt in kickboxing, he’s been showcasing the app around campus since it’s arrival in Manchester. Josh said: “I like the simplicity – it’s to the point and has all the information about a night you’ll need. The swiping side is a lot of fun too.

“When you match with someone, you already know you’re going to have similar interests because you’re going to the same night. It’s also a lot less awkward meeting someone when you’re out with your mates drinking.”

According to Josh, Manchester’s nightlife is one of a kind. He said: “There is a scene for everyone, which is perfect – you can mix up your nights very easily.” His favourite night is Hot Mess, saying: “It’s always busy, you’ll see loads of people you know and the drinks are cheap.”

Josh added: “So far my top night this year was definitely Redlight at Sankeys, which I would have genuinely missed if I hadn’t checked Prelinks that week.”

As a Prelinks ambassador, he finds his job is pretty chilled. The final year said: “Nine out of ten students really like the idea and can see how they would use it, which really sinks in once they download the app and understand how it works – who doesn’t like a good swipe?”

Music student Isabel said: “After spending the summer in Italy, I fell in love with techno music – the DJs were awesome and I loved that the people performing were true artists. So I decided to go from wanting a career in classical music to techno.”

The second year has taken Manchester’s nightlife by the horns – you might catch Isabel DJing at house parties, or if she’s on a big one you’ll find her at WHP. Isabel said: “The techno scene in Manchester is amazing. I’d definitely recommend seeing Meat Free DJs at Mantra. The music at Mantra is always very authentic.”

When it comes to Prelinks, Isabel said: “There was previously no easy way for me to find out everything that’s going on in Manchester. Prelinks wants students to be able to find the nights that suit them and help them meet people who have the same taste.”

Isabel loves meeting new people and said: “A lot of my friends don’t like techno, so it’s great to find people who like the same type of music as you.”

“You are both going to the same event already, so you don’t have to make a whole date around it. You can chat to them beforehand and meet them at the event you were already going to.”

Isabel thinks Prelinks is a great app to be a part of. She said: “I love how social the Prelinks gang are – you get to meet people all the time. Whenever I’m working I’m always in a good mood, it’s great to chat to new people whilst promoting the app.”
