Lancaster University increases 16 places in sustainability ranking

The university has placed 63rd this year, increasing from 79th last year


Lancaster University has been ranked 63rd of 153 universities on a measure of sustainability from the People and Planet University League 2022/23.

People and Planets University League describes itself as “the only comprehensive and independent league table of UK universities, that are ranked by their environmental and ethical performance”. Measurements of sustainability given by the People and Planet University League, and the scores given to Lancaster University Include:

  • Environmental Policy and Strategy-  70%
  • Staff and HR- 85%
  • Environmental Auditing and Management Systems – 100%
  • Ethical Investment and Banking – 0%
  • Ethical Careers and Recruitment- 6%
  • Managing Carbon- 55%
  • Workers’ Rights- 35%
  • Sustainable Food- 40%
  • Staff and Student Engagement- 75%
  • Education for Sustainable Development- 89%
  • Energy Sources- 55%
  • Waste and Recycling- 12.5%
  • Carbon Reduction- 12.5%
  • Water Reduction 11%

Overall, Lancaster scored an average of 46.1% across measures with the suggestion that Lancaster has not met their emissions reduction target. This placed Lancaster in the 2:2 class category, the same as last year despite improvement. This category also included Universities such as University of Manchester, University of York and Loughborough University.
