Firefighter dies following Edinburgh Jenners blaze

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition on Monday

A firefighter has died after being injured whilst tackling a major fire in the centre of Edinburgh on Monday.

Barry Martin, 38, died at the Royal Infirmary hospital on Friday, it has been confirmed.

He was taken to hospital with four of his colleagues after the blaze took hold of the former Jenners department store building, causing major disruption to the city.

The Interim Chief Officer of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Ross Haggart, announced the news “with great sadness” on Friday afternoon.

“Our thoughts remain with his family, friends and colleagues at this deeply distressing time”, he added.

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said: “This is a terrible tragedy for all who loved him – but also a reminder of the selfless courage our firefighters demonstrate in the line of duty each and every day”.
