Notts uni students organise donations to help those affected by Turkey-Syria earthquake

Nottingham students at Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham are collecting donations for victims of recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

There will also be a bake sale on Thursday 9th February from 9am to 6pm to raise money for those affected. It will take place on the C floor of the Portland building.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.8, took place on Monday 6th February at 4.17am local time. It was followed by a series of aftershocks which caused further damage.

It has claimed the lives of more than 7,000 people and injured thousands more, but the UN has said that these figures may reach 20,000, The Guardian reports.

The drop off address for those wanting to donate supplies is: University of Nottingham’s Psychology Building Main Entrance. Suggested donations are non-perishable goods, and hygiene essentials.

Nazo Öz, the President of psychosoc, is organising the donations process. She said: “As we expect the injuries are over 20,000. The next step after this is even more crucial as these people will be losing their home and living in tents for a while, as the Turkish community we are expecting everyone and anyone to help raise awareness. ”
