The Bristol Tab needs you: Apply to be part of the 2023-2024 editorial team

Every year, the editorial team for The Bristol Tab switches from the grey faced, exhausted students to bright eyed, enthusiastic new ones. The time has arrived and you could be the next leader of the BEST student newspaper in Bristol.

Do you have what it takes to steer the publication which is read by thousands of students every month?

Applications for the up coming year’s editorial team are now open. The positions available are: Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor, Social Media Editor and TikTok Editor.

Experience in journalism is not essential because you will receive training from experienced student editors and journalists from The Tab HQ. Being on the editorial team is a serious commitment however, and we advise that you consider it thoroughly before completing an application.

The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday 30 April.

What you’ll be doing:

Editor-in-Chief

You will be responsible for overseeing every article published by The Bristol Tab and lead the direction of our coverage. It is your responsibility to organise the weekly meetings as well as write content, commission articles to the team and communicate with The Tab HQ.

Day to day, you will work with section editors to make sure we are breaking big stories and publishing entertaining features. You will work closely with the Social Media editor to ensure regular posting takes place as well as be able to help create content.

Alongside this, you’ll be managing and editing individual writers, making sure The Bristol Tab has the most talented writers in our team.

This role is suited to somebody who is motivated, passionate to represent students and above all, organised. You will need to be able to oversee all the moving parts of The Bristol Tab and manage your time effectively.

News Editor

You’ll be responsible for finding out all the most shocking scoops on campus.

It’s your responsibility to keep your finger on the pulse and to know a good story when you see one. You’ll also write every week and support the Editor-in-Chief by editing articles.

News is unpredictable and fast paced, when a story occurs you will need to have the ability to move quickly and efficiently.

Features Editor

You’ll be in charge of writing and editing our banging feature pieces. You should have a strong idea of what you would like the features section of The Bristol Tab to look like and where you aim to take it.

The role allows you to be witty, educational, opinionated and creative in your writing.

It’s important you know what’s relevant, interesting and funny to the specific student audience at Bristol Uni. You will bring article ideas to the meeting and help writers develop.

Social Media Editor

You will have an eye for the latest trends, memes and aesthetics. You should be confident in your ability to create engaging content which fits the style of The Bristol Tab.

You’ll be responsible for managing our various social media channels: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, helping to publish our stories and find new, original ways of reaching our audience.

This will include sharing articles, creating insta stories, finding and creating memes, uploading footage of events and making sure our student audience is always engaged and interacting.

TikTok Editor 

This role is suited to someone who is very confident in front of the camera, enjoys having a laugh with other students and likes making TikTok content.

You must be able to keep an eye on all the latest TikTok trends and audios and adapt them to be Bristol Uni related. Our existing interview format is very successful and would be good to be continued on TikTok and Instagram Reels.
