The Notts Tab needs you: Applications for our editorial team are now OPEN

Applications close at 23:59 on Friday 12th May


Each year, the time comes for the Nottingham Tab team, having had their run as editors, to pass on the baton to the successive fresh-faced editorial team. It’s a big deal, but we’ve grown older and wiser and the time has come to say goodbye. Having picked up a few skills and tricks along the way, we’ve had our opportunity to grow pure journalistic talent, but now it’s your turn. You could be the next leader of the BEST student newspaper in Nottingham.

Do you have what it takes to steer the publication which is read by thousands of students every month, as part of The Tab which has over seven million monthly readers?

Applications for the up coming year’s editorial team are now open. The positions available are: Editor in Chief, News Editor, Features Editor, Social Media Editor and TikTok Editor.

The deadline for submitting applications is 23:59 on Friday 12th May, with successful applicants to be informed the following week.

Experience in journalism is not essential because you will receive training from experienced student editors and journalists from The Tab HQ. Being on the editorial team is a serious commitment however, and we advise that you consider it thoroughly before completing an application.

Editor in Chief

You will be responsible for overseeing every article published by The Nottingham Tab and lead the direction of our coverage. It is your responsibility to organise the weekly meetings as well as write content, commission articles to the team and communicate with The Tab HQ.

Day to day, you will work with section editors to make sure we are breaking big stories and publishing entertaining features. You will work closely with the Social Media editor to ensure regular posting takes place as well as be able to help create content.

Alongside this, you’ll be managing and editing individual writers, making sure The Nottingham Tab has the most talented writers in our team.

You’ll be responsible for finding out all the most shocking new stories on campus. It’s your responsibility to keep your finger on the pulse and to know a good story when you see one.

News is unpredictable and fast paced, when a story occurs you will need to have the ability to move quickly and efficiently. This often involves reacting quickly to fast-paced, ever-changing stories as they develop on the day.

You’ll support the Editor in Chief in writing and editing articles weekly, coming up with pitches and article commissions and supporting writers. The roles of section editors are not black and white so you may also be expected to regularly write and edit feature articles, not just news.

Features Editor

You’ll be in charge of writing and editing our banging feature pieces. You should have a strong idea of what you would like the features section of The Nottingham Tab to look like and where you aim to take it.

The role allows you to be witty, educational, opinionated and creative in your writing. You’ll be able to cover every aspect of student life, from nightlife to fashion and food.  You will also oversee the quizzes, opinion pieces, guides and other fun stories that we write. Rating outfits on campus, or arguing which Notts club is better.

It’s important you know what’s relevant, interesting and funny to the specific Notts student audience. You will also support the Editor in Chief in editing and writing articles each week, coming up with pitches and article commissions and supporting writers. The roles of section editors are not black and white and you may also be expected to regularly write and edit news articles, not just features.

Social Media Editor

You will have an eye for the latest trends, memes and aesthetics. You should be confident in your ability to create engaging content which fits the style of The Nottingham Tab.

You’ll be responsible for managing our various social media channels: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, helping to publish our stories and find new, original ways of reaching our audience.

This will include sharing articles, creating insta stories, finding and creating memes, uploading footage of events and making sure our student audience is always engaged and interacting.

TikTok Editor 

This role is suited to someone who is very confident in front of the camera, enjoys having a laugh with other students and likes making TikTok content.

You must be able to keep an eye on all the latest TikTok trends and audios and adapt them to be Notts related. We need someone creative, outgoing and happy to be on camera as you will be expected to regularly create vox pops interviewing students on campus or nights out, as well as an eye for video-editing.
