Owner of Lancaster restaurant Bombay Balti fined after breaching food hygiene regulations

The restaurant has since been taken under new management


The owner of Bombay Balti Lancaster Limited, on China Street, has pleaded guilty to breaking 10 food and hygiene regulations.

A number of inspections from May to October 2021 served five hygiene improvement notices, relating to allergen controls, poor hygienic practices, staff training, and improvements to the floor and ceiling.

As of 31st May 2023, owner Nasrul Islam Kahn has been ordered to pay £27, 538 after pleading guilty to the offences. The company itself was fined £18,114, with a victim surcharge of £190.

Lancaster City Council had previously given the restaurant a food hygiene rating of one on 5th August 2021, stating “Major Improvement Necessary”.

The restaurant’s 10 food hygiene breaches included high risk foods being stored at ambient temperatures, staff not being given adequate drying materials at wash basins, a high risk of cross contamination, and severe ceiling damage which created an accumulation of dirt and shedding of particles in the preparation area.

According to the Lancaster Guardian, Joanne Ainscough (cabinet member with responsibility for environmental health and enforcement) stated that “the council will not hesitate to take enforcement action and they could find themselves on the receiving end of a significant fine” if food businesses find themselves with significant food hygiene failings.

Bombay Balti Lancaster Limited is now under new management and has a “good” food hygiene rating of four, as of 20th April 2023.
