Brutal Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon digs prove George Martin hates both shows

He has not held back at all

Slated House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones for its depiction of dragons

George RR Martin shared in a blog post, his frustration with both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones for their inaccurate and “sloppy” depictions of dragons.

He wrote on his blog: “For what it’s worth, the shows got it half right. Both of them. Game of Thrones gave us the correct two legged sigils for the first four seasons and most of the fifth, but when Dany’s fleet came into view, all the sails showed four-legged dragons. Someone got sloppy, I guess. Or someone opened a book on heraldry, and read just enough of it to muck it all up. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

“A couple years on, House of the Dragon decide the heraldry should be consistent with Game of Thrones, but they went with the bad sigil rather than the good one. That sound you heard was me screaming, ‘no, no, no.’ Those damned extra legs have even wormed their way onto the covers of my books, over my strenuous objections.

He continued: “The three wild dragons mentioned in Fire & Blood have lairs on Dragonstone. The rest can be found in the Dragonpit of King’s Landing, or in deep caverns under the Dragonmont. Luke flies Arrax to Storm’s End and Jace to Winterfell, yes, but the dragons would not have flown there on their own, save under very special circumstances. You won’t find dragons hunting the riverlands or the Reach or the Vale, or roaming the northlands or the mountains of Dorne.

“Fantasy needs to be grounded. It is not simply a license to do anything you like. Smaug and Toothless may both be dragons, but they should never be confused. Ignore canon, and the world you’ve created comes apart like tissue paper.” Note to self, never get between George R R Martin and his dragons.

Being uninvolved in *that* Game of Thrones finale

Whilst George has never directly shared his honest thoughts on the Game of Thrones ending, he admitted to the New York Times that “by season five and six, and certainly seven and eight, I was pretty much out of the loop.” Was he deliberately not consulted or did he just not like the direction the show was going in anymore? At this point who knows?

Announced plans to write about ‘everything wrong’ with House of the Dragon season two

We’ve got even more George RR Martin slander coming soon too as he recently announced his plans to write about “everything wrong” with House of the Dragon.

He explained in a blog post: “I do not look forward to other posts I need to write, about everything that’s gone wrong with House of the Dragon … but I need to do that too, and I will. Not today, though.” I’m genuinely on the edge of my seat.

Criticised Game of Thrones for one of its key scenes

The author has openly spoken about his least favourite scene in Game of Thrones, telling the interviewer: “Where we really fell down in terms of budget was my least favourite scene in the show, in all eight seasons. King Robert goes hunting. Four guys walking on foot through the woods carrying spears, and Robert is giving Renly shit.

“In the books, Robert goes off hunting, and we get word that he was gored by a boar… so I never did [a hunting scene]. But I knew what a royal hunting party was like. There would be hundreds of guys. There would have been pavilions. There would have been dogs. There would have been horns blowing—that’s how a king goes hunting! He wouldn’t have just been walking through the woods with three of his friends holding spears, hoping to meet a boar.”

Refusing to join the writer’s room for season three of House of the Dragon

He really has a bee in his bonnet about House of the Dragon, and whilst he was “out of the loop” for Game of Thrones, George RR Martin has outright refused to join the writer’s room for season three of the show.

In his blog he subtly shaded the show, writing: “The writers’ room for House of the Dragon season three is also meeting in London, but I have no plans to attend.” The shade is real.

Has frustrations with ‘issues’ in House of the Dragon season two

George has already touched upon some of the aspects he didn’t like in House of the Dragon season two, mentioning the show had some ‘issues’ raised by its episodes. He wrote: “The only part of the show that is drawing criticism is the conclusion of the Blood and Cheese storyline. Which ending was powerful, I thought… a gut punch, especially for viewers who had never read Fire & Blood. For those who had read the book, however…

“Well, there’s a lot to be said about that, but this is not the place for me to say it. The issues are too complicated. Somewhere down the line, I will do a separate post about all the issues raised by Blood and Cheese… and Maelor the Missing. There’s a lot to say.” I genuinely cannot wait for the takedown.
