J-Lo and Ben this, Bennifer that, but everyone knows the real soulmate relationship here is the bromance between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

I mean you only need to look at the glances these two share to know they’re destined to be together, they even shared a bank account at one point and if that doesn’t scream couple vibes I don’t know what does.

Regardless of whether these two have unresolved feelings for one another, their friendship is very wholesome and it’s refreshing to see two male Hollywood actors being so open about how much they love each other. But where did their close bond start from? From the early years of their childhood friendship all the way up to now, let’s have a look at the entire history of the bromance between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

No, because this is genuinely like something out of a Hallmark film. The fact they lived two blocks away from each other is genuinely too wholesome. The pair became close friends in 1980 when they both discovered their shared love for baseball and acting. 

In 2019, Matt remembered in an interview on Conan how their friendship was cemented when Ben defended Matt from a bully in school. He explained: “I remember that was like a big moment. He will put himself in a really bad spot for me. This is a good friend.”

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck only cemented their bromance with each other further when they started auditioning together, with Ben recalling: “Before Matt, I was by myself. Acting was a solo activity where I’d just go off and do something, act in a little TV show or something, and no one understood it.

“None of the other kids knew what it was I did, how it worked, or anything. All of a sudden I had this friend, Matt, and he gets it and wants to do it and thinks it’s interesting and wants to talk about it. Soon both of us are doing it.”

They went on to co-write Good Will Hunting

In 1994 they decided to write a script for Good Will Hunting and have joked about how a lot of the initial drafts were completely improvised, revealing: “We would improvise and drink like six or twelve beers or whatever and record it with a tape recorder.

“At the time we imagined the professor and the shrink would be Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro, so we’d do our imitations of Freeman and De Niro. It was kind of hopelessly naive and probably really embarrassing in that respect.”

In 2021 during an interview with GQ, Ben raves about his friendship with Matt, saying: “My own kind of sanity and mental health really benefited from having someone who I grew up with and knew as a child who was also going through something similar — this 20-year-plus journey of being in the public eye — who I could reflect on it with honestly, talk things over with, be myself with, who I knew why we were friends, why he was interested and loved me, why I loved him.”

During a joint appearance on The Bill Simmons podcast in 2023, Matt recalled them sharing a bank account at the start of their careers. He explained: “It was unusual, but we needed the money for auditions. It was a weird thing in retrospect.”
