The Perfect Couple killer reveals their character’s true reasons behind murdering Merritt

It all makes so much more sense now

The Perfect Couple is full of twists and turns with almost every character having some major motivations for potentially murdering Merritt. It’s only when we get to the end that we find out it’s none other than Abby Winbury who ended up deliberately drowning Merritt.

In case you need a little refresher about why Abby killed Merritt in The Perfect Couple, we find out that Tag and Merritt had been having a secret affair which resulted in a pregnancy. If the baby was born it would mean that the other Winbury children wouldn’t receive their trust funds until the baby turned 18, meaning they’d all have to wait another 18 years instead of mere months, as the youngest sibling, Will, was almost 18.

Abby doesn’t want to wait that long to get her money, and so whilst her husband Thomas tried to threaten Merritt into getting an abortion, it didn’t go to plan and Isabel stopped him. So, Abby decided to take charge instead and drugged Merritt by crushing up a concoction of pills and putting them in Merritt’s orange juice, before taking her into the bay and drowning her. Yikes.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Elle Fanning who plays Abby revealed her character’s true motivations for killing Merritt. She confessed: “I see it as even more than just the money.

“I see it as saving the facade, being the person that saved this f*cked up family and kept it all together. And of course, there’s going to be a win for her in it, whether it’s for herself or whether it’s for her child”

She continues: “Because also by the way, if she doesn’t get her money, she probably has to leave Thomas and find someone else. You know what I mean? I think that the decision making is from feeling not seen, not valued, cast to the side.

“And also feeling like, ‘I’m married to this f*cking dumbass and I am mad at myself that I’m in this situation, and now have to fix it.”‘In our heightened world, that means the drugging and drowning of human beings.
