The eerie similarities between the play Erik Menendez wrote and the murder of his parents

‘The opening scene of the play happened to coincide with what happened on the night of the murders’

During Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, we learn that before killing his parents, Erik Menendez actually wrote a play in which the main character kills his parents to gain their inheritance.

The similarities between the play and the real life events of their parent’s murder are eerily similar, but what was the play really like?

The play was 66 pages in total and was written by Erik Menendez along with his high school friend Craig Cignarelli, with the pair deciding to title it Friends. The overarching plot is centred around a son who kills his parents to inherit their $157 million fortune.

The idea of the script came about after Erik and Craig wondered about how one would commit the perfect crime, with them writing the main character as 18 year old Hamilton Cromwell. Hamilton is obsessed with death, and at the start of the play he “smiles sadistically” as his parent’s $157 million dollar will is read out to him.

Hamilton decides to kill his parents, however, the play jumps to after they’ve been murdered so we don’t see how he ends up doing it. We do however see what happens just before they’re killed, with the scene reading: “A gloved hand is seen gripping the doorknob and turning it gently.

“The door opens, exposing the luxurious sight of Mr. and Mrs. Cromwell lying in bed. Their faces are of questioning horror as Hamilton closes the door behind them, gently saying, ‘Good evening, mother. Good evening, father.’”

He then goes on to kill his girlfriend along with two others, before Hamilton is eventually shot and killed by his friend.

He recalled: “I remember talking about the opening scene, in just the idea of, ‘We need to establish a crime. We need to have the protagonist gain an inheritance so he can actually fulfil his dream of creating this hunting ground for humans.”

He added: “The opening scene happened to coincide with what happened on the night of the murders.”
