Northumberland Street Barclays covered in red paint and attacked with hammer

Pro-Palestinian protestors have vandalised Barclays branches across the UK

Barclays Bank on Northumberland Street was vandalised this week by pro-Palestinian protestors.

Reports reveal that two men coated the bank’s shop front with re paint and smashed the glass windows and door with a hammer in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Protestors are demanding the bank to end its links with Israeli companies that are linked to the weapons trade and fossil fuels, the Evening Standard reports.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 5.30am today (Tuesday), we responded to a report of criminal damage at a premises on Northumberland Street in Newcastle City Centre. It was reported that two men had thrown paint at the premises and damaged the doors and window with a hammer before fleeing the scene.”

Over 20 other Barclays branches all across the UK have seen similar damage in recent months.

The campaigners have previously said: “Barclays collaboration demanding divestment bank divest from Israel’s weapons trade and fossil fuels has left the bank shattered.”

Barclays has responded with: “We provide vital financial services to US, UK and European public companies that supply defence products to NATO and its allies. Barclays does not directly invest in these companies.

“The defence sector is fundamental to our national security and the UK government has been clear that supporting defence companies is compatible with ESG considerations.

“Decisions on the implementation of arms embargoes to other nations are the job of respective elected governments.

“While we support the right to protest, we ask that campaigners do so in a way which respects our customers, colleagues and property.”

Notices have been put up on the Northumberland Street Barclays, reading: “Sorry, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we’re unable to open this branch at the moment. We’re doing everything we can to get things up and running again. In the meantime, please accept our apologies.”
