University of Exeter is victorious in the first round of University Challenge
This is the 20th team from the University of Exeter to appear in the competition
The University of Exeter quizzed to victory in the first round of University Challenge.
The team achieved a phenomenal 240-100 win against their opponents, Reading University, meaning the players have advanced to the next round of the show.
The programme, which aired on Monday 23rd September on BBC 2, showed an incredible performance from the university where they got off to a flying start with four correct starter questions in a row by teammate Elliot Mouelhi.
The team consisted of both undergraduates and postgraduates from the university.
The team was led by captain Martin Newman, a PhD candidate in history, and alongside him, were undergraduate teammates Lucy Carr (art history and visual culture and classical studies) and Elliott Mouelhi (ancient history and archaeology). Masters student Ryker Moorcroft (natural sciences) completed the team with Benjamin Roth (classics and ancient history) as the reserve.
The team was formed by the Exeter Students’ Guild with the university being selected from a pool of 28 universities after a rigorous recruitment process. They were then required to do auditions before being featured on the show.
After proceeding to the next round, the Exeter team is prohibited from discussing the show until it premieres.
