York students go viral on TikTok for cooking mussels in their Langwith flat

‘Let this man eat his mussels’

We don’t go viral much here at York (apart from when a dead duck gets a funeral broadcast live on the radio). A flat in Langwith has gone viral this week on their shared TikTok account, hitting over a million views. The video shows a guy in the flat cooking mussels for his tea, with oven baked chips and a mysterious orange sauce. Interesting.

We spoke to flat four about the video and their account, which has over 200 followers and 113k likes.

Captioned “POV the north south divide”, the video is also hashtagged #privateschool and #tory. Who knew a uni meal could cause so much havoc? Let’s just say that the comments aren’t holding back.

They said: “We made the account at the start of Freshers’ but didn’t post for ages. I just walked into the kitchen and saw him making mussels which we thought was hilarious.” It is pretty random, what ever happened to pesto pasta?

The north south divide caption has caused a bit of chaos in the comments, but the flat members dispelled any rivalry. They said: “It was all a joke of course and there is no judgement. The north/south bit was just a joke within the flat which sort of took off between people in the comments but there is no animosity between any of us.” Sounds like perfect flat vibes to me.

On the topic of mussels, the comments seem like they’d literally ride at dawn to defend this meal choice. However, the student chef in flat four told us: “I just saw the mussels on the shelf in Lidl and picked them up because I thought they would be quick to make and have good nutrition. And that’s it.” Fair enough!

So let’s take a closer look at the comments, because they’re quite literally insane.

One user wrote, “Anyone making mussels at uni needs a stern talking to”, with a reply from flat four saying “If only I could pin comments rn”.

A comment with over 1,000 likes read: “Tbh any seafood in a uni kitchen is kind of crazy like what are you doing bro”. This is so true, like even salmon pushes my limits. Horrible.

Those defending the mussels are hilarious: “What happened to treating yourself when your student finance comes out, let this man eat his mussels”.

Some are actually quite heated and can’t stop talking about the benefits of mussels. Apparently they’re very cheap and full of protein. So are lentils, but you don’t see uni students boiling them everyday in the kitchen. One comment says “Mussels are cheaper than chicken nuggets what’s your issue”. Is the price the weird thing here though? I don’t know.

Hopefully college flats will keep providing us with some entertainment, I’m waiting patiently flat four x
