Teviot Row House reopening pushed back until 2026

The student union’s redevelopment has been delayed by a year

The reopening of Edinburgh University’s Teviot Row House has been postponed until 2026, following significant delays.

Initially set to reopen early 2025, major issues within the building’s electrical systems have delayed the project, leaving students without their union for another year.

A full reworking of the building’s outdated electrical wiring systems is required in meeting safety standards.

This delay will not only impact the student body, but the location of Fringe events such as the Gilded Balloon’s 40th anniversary shows.

Edinburgh University students are to continue using Potterrow and 40 George square in place of the student union until the redevelopment is completed.

The student union has, since renovations began, been fitted with new access points, bright open spaces, and floor to ceiling skylights in the study.

Once completed, the union will feature a renovated Library Bar and New Amphion, modernising the areas and increasing comfortability, as well as 90 per cent of the building’s access points becoming accessible.

EUSA President Dora Herndon said: We understand the delay to Teviot’s reopening may be upsetting for many students, and that’s a testament to how important this building is to us.

“Teviot is a pillar to our community, and these delays are a part of us undertaking work to guarantee our beloved building will last hundreds of years more. We share your disappointment, and while we can’t make the building works go quicker, we encourage students to please reach out if there is something we can do to make the extended closure easier for them.”
