The old monk who went viral on TikTok has sadly passed away

He lived to a grand old age of 109

Luang Pho Yai, the 109-year-old monk who recently went viral on TikTok, has sadly died.

Yai’s granddaughter shared the sad news on her TikTok account and said her grandfather died on 22nd March at 6:40pm.

She shared a video announcing his death which has since been deleted as well as another video showing someone else attempting to revive him. However a few days later she confirmed his death when she posted the funeral plans for Yai.

In the days following his death Yai’s granddaughter has shared many clips of the funeral rites and people have been paying their respects.

The videos are still generating over millions of views with one posted three days ago that has now been viewed over 150million times.

She also shared a TikTok on her account called “auyary13” of his ashes which many people have been commenting on saying to do so is inappropriate and disrespectful.

Yai first went viral earlier this year when his granddaughter began sharing TikToks of him from his hospital bed.

The videos received millions of views and comments with people making jokes about his age, causing a rumour to spread that he was 163 years old. People would refer to him as “bro” and joked that he had lived longer than dinosaurs and was the inventor of terms and conditions.

People also asked if Yai was in the process of Sokushinbutsu. Sokushinbutsu is a popular Buddhist practice in Japan which sees people enter mummification whilst still alive.

Yai was not doing this process and his granddaughter asked for people to respectful rather than making jokes.

He was taken into hospital in January this year after breaking his hip bone and his granddaughter had been documenting his time in hospital ever since.
