Bottoms up! These are the Russell Group unis with the most pubs in 2024

I finally understand why people go to uni in London

University rankings like the Times Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide consider many factors like graduate employment rates and quality of teaching when they rank the Russell Group unis. Instead, maybe they should base their maths on what actually matters the most to students – proximity to pubs.

The travel site OMIO counted how many pubs there are in different UK uni cities. Surely students at Russell Group unis will need plenty of trips to pubs in order to recuperate from all that studying they’ve been doing (or tell their parents they’ve been doing, anyway).

Durham may not be the best uni to go to if you like going to the pub. The city had just 20 pubs to serve a student population of 22,000. Atrocious. Presumably this is yet another reason why Durham students all wish they’d gone to Oxbridge – Both Cambridge and Oxford have twice as many pubs as Durham has.

Imperial College London, King’s College London, LSE and Queen Mary University of London top the charts, which makes sense considering that it’s easier to find a pub in London than it is a load of bread. OMIO estimates that there are a thousand pubs in London. It’s a shame that London uni students will practically have to sell their spleens in order to afford a pint.
