Edinburgh among the BEST nights out in the UK in new ranking

The capital tops the rankings for Scotland with Glasgow being ranked among the bottom 10

Edinburgh has officially been ranked Scotland’s best student night, coming in seventh across the United Kingdom.

Glasgow ranked in as the ninth worst city for a night in the UK, despite cheaper taxis and pints on average, according to the Get Licensed ranking.

Durham, York and Newcastle topped the list, while London, Coventry and Birmingham ranked among the worst in the UK, with their high prices and low levels of safety.

The list has been compiled using a combination of 12 factors which came together to form a “University night out score”, ranked out of 10.

Edinburgh came in at seventh (6.45), while Glasgow (3.94), struggling in its safety related factors, placed in the bottom 10.  London (1.36) was ranked as the UK’s worst night out, while Durham (9.44) took home first place.

The listing used data collected from Numbeo to calculate the average price of taxis and pints, as well as all of the safety factors such as the feeling of safety when walking home at night and the fear of being attacked or mugged.

Edinburgh fared significantly better in its safety scores than its West coast counterpart with its overall score for safety, ranked out of a hundred, of 69 compared to Glasgow’s 55. However, it remained far off the top two of Durham (80) and York (73). Despite being in the top 3 overall, Newcastle ranked at poorly in its safety scores at 62.

Glasgow did beat out the capital in areas like the average price for a pint, with a pint of beer costing £4.50 on average compared to Edinburgh’s £5.

The quality of venue also let Scotland’s most populated city down with Edinburgh beating Glasgow’s 81 per cent of bars and clubs being three star or above by a whole 10 per cent with 91 per cent according to reviews from Tripadvisor.

While struggling to beat top dog Durham in any categories apart from population and total number of pubs and nightclubs (with Durham beating Edinburgh out when taking population difference into account), the Scottish champion was able to beat both second placed York and third placed Newcastle in a number of factors.

York placed lower in terms of number of nightclubs and bars per 100,000 people and the number of three or above rated establishments. Newcastle was also beat out when it comes to the percentage of three or higher starred venues while also ranking worse off in terms of many safety indexes including fear of being mugged or robbed, fear of being attacked and feeling of safety when walking alone at night.
