Cowgate nightlife disrupted by Edinburgh power outage

The EH1 postcode lost connection around 10pm on Friday, impacting late night venues on Cowgate as well as Kincaids Court and Robertson’s Close student accomodations


A major power outage was reported around 9:53pm on Friday evening.

The outage had been “affecting the EH1 postcode area of Edinburgh”, encompassing the popular nightlife area of Cowgate.

Electricity was eventually restored around 23:16.

On its website, Scottish Power Energy Network told customers that energy was “expected to be restored by midnight”.

The outage has led to a disrupted Friday night for Edinburgh pub and club goers, with popular venues such as The Hive, Subway and Three Sisters being impacted by the cuts.

A number of student accommodations were impacted by the outage, including Kincaids Court and Robertson’s Close.

Pubs in the popular tourist hot-spot Grassmarket were also impacted.

Queues could be seen outside of many venues as staff close the doors or prohibit customers from entering.

Power was restored briefly at 22:46 before cutting out a couple of minutes later.

Crowds on the street could be seen cheering, before letting out groans of disappointment moments later.

Scottish Power has been approached for comment.

The University of Edinburgh has been approached for comment.
