Kim Kardashian slams media for turning Menendez brothers into ‘eye candy’ in lengthy essay

She called upon them to be freed and claimed they were ‘not monsters’ when she visited them in jail

Kim Kardashian wrote a really long article for NBC News about why she thinks the Menendez brothers should be freed from prison.

In case you haven’t already binged all of Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the brothers were imprisoned in 1996 for killing their parents in their Beverley Hills mansion in 1989. The case is really controversial, because the brothers were charged with murder even though they claim their father sexually abused them throughout their childhoods.

The essay begins with a very philosophical and profound statement. “We are all products of our experiences. They shape who we were, who we are, and who we will be. Physiologically and psychologically, time changes us, and I doubt anyone would claim to be the same person they were at 18. I know I’m not!”

The article describes in detail what the Menendez brothers were like when Kim Kardashain, Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Cooper Koch (the actor who plays Erik in Monsters) visited San Diego County’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in September.

Kim Kardashian wrote, “I have spent time with Lyle and Erik; they are not monsters. They are kind, intelligent, and honest men.” She claims that one of the prison wardens told her that he would feel safe if the Menendez brothers were his neighbours. Apparently, the brothers “both have exemplary disciplinary records” in prison. They’ve helped looked after elderly prisoners and mentored people in college programmes.

She criticised the Menendez brothers’ trial and the Saturday Night Live about them. She wrote, “The media turned the brothers into monsters and sensationalised eye candy” and “Erik and Lyle had no chance of a fair trial against this backdrop.”

The article then outlines all the evidence that has come to light since the trials, including the letter that Erik sent to his cousin in 1988 about his father abusing him, and the statements from 24 family members that support Erik and Lyle.

Kim Kardashian also throws in a reference to the trial of O.J. Simpson, in which her father was the defence attorney. She mentions, “More than four months after the Menendez mistrials, O.J. Simpson was charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman,” then goes back to narrating what happened at Erik and Lyle Menendez’s two trials.

The essay ends with “My hope is that Erik and Lyle Menendez’s life sentences are reconsidered. We owe it to those little boys who lost their childhoods, who never had a chance to be heard, helped or saved.”

Kim Kardashian announced in 2019 that she was training to be a lawyer, and hasn’t let anyone forget it since. She has actually advocated for several imprisoned people who she felt had too harsh sentences, and helped them to be released earlier.

Her byline on NBC News describes her as “a businesswoman, media star and criminal justice reform advocate.”
